Presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association and the Society of Professional Journalists, the Excellence in Journalism 2011 conference in New Orleans, Sept. 25-27, will be THE journalism event of the year. The conference boasts a large number of sessions on everything from social media to open records access to entrepreneurial skills.

Consider these five (of many) reasons to attend:

1. Dozens of professional development sessions that will benefit people at all levels: reporters, editors, station managers and freelancers. See the growing session list.

2. Opportunities for resume, writing, tape and clip critiques from knowledgeable, experienced journalists and trainers. See more highlights.

3. Sessions with proven industry leaders and innovators, like NPR social media strategist Andy Carvin (@acarvin on Twitter). Carvin is known for his curation of news and information coming out of uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa.

4. Exhibitors ranging from graduate school recruiters to newsroom technology developers – there’s something for everyone at all levels, from reporters to managers.

5. Many networking, social and volunteer opportunities through banquets, receptions, breakout sessions and a community service project with Second Harvest Food Bank. See the full conference schedule.

Of course, there are many more offerings and reasons to attend. Review the conference website to see what’s awaiting you and your colleagues in New Orleans.
